Crazy News Monday; Ghostbusters Check Insane Asylum

The Iowa County Board has given it’s okay for Ghostbusters to investigate a one-time insane asylum. Okay this isn’t Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz or Peter Venkman and technically they’re called ghost hunters now but ghostbusters made for a better title.

Anyway, Brandon Cochran, the museum operations assistant for the Johnson County Historical Society, said there have never been reports of ghosts or bizarre happenings at the building and that bringing in a paranormal team is "kind of taking the pre-emptive approach”. Cochran wants the ghost hunters to come in for one night and hopes that they don't find any paranormal activity and the investigation can put to rest any speculation.

The building which is 153-years-old is now called Chatham Oaks, and houses people with physical and mental disabilities. Officials said it was okay for the ghostbusters to come in as long as they don’t spook the residents. And that says it all.

Crazy News Monday; Corn Flake Sells For $1,350 On eBay

Here’s proof that you can sell anything on eBay. Two sisters from Virginia sold an Illinois-shaped corn flake on eBay Friday night for $1,350.

The first time the sisters started the corn flake auction it was cancelled for being in violation of eBay’s food policy. The sister re-listed the auction, this time for a coupon redeemable for the corn flake.

The winner of the auction, Monty Kerr, owns TriviaMania.com a trivia Web site. Kerr said he is starting a collection of pop culture and Americana items and that the corn flake would be fantastic. Kerr had bought a corn flake before that was billed as the largest in the world, but by the time it was delivered it had crumbled into three pieces. Kerr plans to have someone pick up the Illinois corn flake.

So if you have some strange item or something shaped like a state or a person, I suggest you try to sell it on eBay, it might be a win fall. And that says it all.

The 5th Annual Dark Sky Festival

Do you know wonderful it is to look up at the sky at night and see it full of stars? Probably not, not with all the light pollution we have now a days. I remember as a kid being able to go the park and look up at the stars for hours.

Well, the Dark Sky Festival seeks to bring back the wonderment of the night sky. This is the 5th of the festival that is held in Harmony, Florida. The festival will be held at the Harmony Town Square on Saturday, April 5, 2008. There will be telescopes on hand to allow for viewing the stars, astronomers and other scientists that you can meet and talk to and kids can play in the “Cosmic Kids Zone”.

There will also be food and music. This year’s special musical guest is the Motown group “Rare Earth” playing their hit songs "Get Ready" and "I Just Want To Celebrate". There will also be speakers talking about Myths in the Night, speakers talking about light pollution. This year’s Dark Sky Festival kicks off the start of National Dark Sky Week, a week dedicated to detering light pollution by encouraging better overall outdoor lighting practices. See the Dark Sky Festival press release below for more information. And that says it all.

Press Release:

Get Ready! This Year’s Dark Sky Festival is Out-of-this-World

HARMONY, FL – March 15, 2008 – The 5th Annual Dark Sky Festival at Harmony will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2008. Sponsored by the Harmony Institute, the Kissimmee Convention and Visitors Bureau, several astronomy clubs, the Osceola News Gazette and Florida Travel & Life Magazine, the event will kick off at 7pm in Harmony's Town Square.

“The Dark Sky Festival is intended to celebrate and promote the benefits of a night-sky free from the effects of excessive artificial lighting,” said Greg Golgowski, Harmony’s Conservation Director and a key member of the Dark Sky Festival Planning Committee. “Poor outdoor lighting not only washes out the splendor of the heavens, but also reduces visibility at night, wastes energy, and disturbs wildlife.”

As with the past four Dark Sky Festivals, attendees will be able to enjoy viewing the night skies through a variety of telescopes. There also be lots of music and food, numerous specialty booths, an educational zone with presentations from astronomers and other scientists, nocturnal creatures, a Cosmic Kids Zone and so much more.”

Local favorite, the Silver Clouds Orchestra, will start the entertainment portion of the evening at 7:00pm. This will be followed by a free concert by legendary recording artists, Rare Earth.

Rare Earth will take to Harmony’s outdoor amphitheatre stage at 8:00pm for a live concert chock full of their greatest hits including “Get Ready” and “I Just Want to Celebrate.”

“We are ecstatic to have Rare Earth performing at this year’s Festival,” said Shad Tome, president of Harmony Development Group. “We are encouraging everyone to wear comfortable shoes because Rare Earth is known for getting the whole audience up and dancing.”

The festival will be emceed by Magic 107.7’s afternoon drive on-air personality and program director Ken Payne.

The Festival is open to the general public. Over 3,500 people are expected to attend the event this year. The event will conclude around 11:00pm.

This date was selected because it falls on the heels of National Dark Sky week (March 29 – April 4); where people in the United States are encouraged to turn out their unnecessary outdoor lights in order to temporarily reduce light pollution.

Crazy News Monday; 6-foot-Tall Glass Of Guinness Stolen

Here’s one for St.Patrick’s Day. A costume shaped like a green Guinness pint-glass was stolen from an Eastpointe, Michigan resident's garage. The costume was flown to Michigan from Ireland to be used as advertising. The costume was loaned out for Halloween by Detroit beer Distribution Company.

The owner of the home where the costume was stored found out it had been stolen after the company asked for it back. The costume is believed to be one of only two such costumes in the U.S.

Police think that the thief may use the costume to dress up for St. Patrick’s Day. What better time to dress up as a green Guinness pint-glass. And that says it all.

Crazy News Monday; Snow Helps Nap Burglar

Snowfall in Springdale helped police catch a burglar who robbed a Papa John's Pizza outlet. Police showed up at the Papa John's after an alarm went off about 5 a.m. Police saw that the door had been forced opened, but also noticed footprints in the snow.

Police followed the footprints which led them to the back of Ana's Family Boutique where they found Bradley T. Hyde carrying clothing he had taken from the Boutique. Apparently Hyde had kicked in the back door to the Cecilia's Salon and had climbed through the ceiling to Ana's Family Boutique.

$166 was found on Hyde which police believed come from the Papa John's burglary.

I’m wondering how stupid this guy is. I mean he didn’t know he was leaving footprints in SNOW? I wonder if he would have left pizza crumbs if it weren’t snowing? And that says it all.

Crazy News Monday; Robber Leaves Tax Form

Well, its official tax season is upon us. It’s time when everyone’s thoughts are on paying their taxes or getting their tax return. Take the young man in Des Moines, Iowa. This guy goes in to rob a Git-N-Go store telling a clerk he had a gun.

At some point the robber took of his hat and coat and in his rush to get away with the $115 he stole he left them behind. The police found a tax form in the coat pocket checked the name on the form and found a listing for a 25-year-old with a suspended driver's license who is on probation for theft. The man's description matched the description given by the store clerk.

The police have yet to find the robber, but I’m sure the IRS will if he doesn’t file those taxes. And that says it all.
